With the threat from Storm Dennis as a background to the visit of Whitby for the first time to Broadway West and with the pitch having survived the winds and rains of the previous week, the visitors got the game underway on time. However, on 52 seconds their right wing, Sam Porter, was brought down as he charged towards the home try-line and suffered an horrific leg injury. Fortunately Dr CJ Campeljohn was on hand to help him. Unfortunately, an ambulance had to be called and, despite a quick response from them, the game was suspended for thirty minutes, as Sam couldn't be moved. We wish him a speedy and full recovery.
When the game did eventually restart, Gosforth took an early lead on 9 minutes through a powerful run by centre, Josh Unthank, who scored halfway out. Scrum-half, Dan Slater, converted for a 7-0 lead. This lead only lasted three minutes before opposing scrum-half, Jan Jacobs, scythed his way over untouched from a powerful Whitby scrum. Aaron Jones converted from in front of the posts to level the score at 7-7. The latter was to miss a possible three points later on in the half, as was Dan Slater for the hosts. Thus the score remained the same until half-time in the gathering gloom.
Correctly the referee asked for our new lights to be put on for the second half. This was the first ever game to be played under lights at Broadway West! The second half got underway through Whitby and, indeed, it was they that scored the next points on 50 minutes. From an untidy scrum in the home "22", lock, Adam Swalwell, picked up and strode over by the posts for Jones to convert (7-14). Could Gos hold on or, even better, increase their own score? Unfortunately, as has been the case in several games this disappointing season, the answer was "no" to the latter. The greasy conditions made running and holding on to passes increasingly difficult and the more powerful visitors' pack were able to stem any promising home attack. Both sides tackled magnificently throughout in the difficult conditions and it was through this that the defences had the upper hand - leaving the final score unchanged at 7-14. The game eventually ended at 4.20 pm with the new lights proving their worth! The losing bonus point may yet prove invaluable in our struggle to avoid relegation.
Next weekend sees a short break for the RFU Cup, so our next game is at home to Darlington on February 29th KO 2.15.
